| Page 1 of 2 | Previous | Next | ALEX BLOM AUGUST 28, 2010 Why Social Media gurus should be trampled by elephants Several weeks ago I wrote that social media is not new. only partially called out the pony, rainbow and unicorn practitioner’s though. ve been ‘doing the Twitter’ for years now and social media gurus there is what teenage girls once were to Myspace. Worse, these gurus claim to be offering professional services. If I had my say they would all be trampled by elephants. So, without further ado, here are my top 5 reasons your social media guy needs to be trampled by an elephant. Ponies, Rainbows and Unicorns. Ask them what they do. They may as well talk about ponies, rainbows and unicorns. | ALEX BLOM JANUARY 16, 2011 Mistakes startups make (and you should avoid) Photo credit Glenn Loos-Austin , taken at Disney. Hopefully you get the relevance to this post. Startups are high risk. They are hard. At the early stages, its 2-5 people against the world with constrained resources. You need to grow to stay alive. Perhaps one of the the hardest things with startups is avoiding common pitfalls. Im hardly the writer of these points, just the curator. | | | | | | | ALEX BLOM JUNE 27, 2010 A quick and dirty study on Social Media Image courtesy of Lumaxart. I've noticed lately that my buying behavior has been switching to brand who are on social media and, more importantly, brands who would engage with me (more on that soon). wanted to see if I was an oddity | ALEX BLOM JULY 18, 2011 Forget Acquisitions: Apple control the Supply Lines With Apple holding more cash than most companies will generate in revenue, the question often becomes ‘who will they buy’. But Apple make fewer acquisitions than their competitors, and tend to hold the cash ( they do generate a healthy return through an investment portfolio ), so the question becomes: where does the cash go? Over on Quora , an anonymous user posted very revealing insights on Apples investment activities. The answer: to stay ahead, Apple over-invest in their supply chain. Put simply, new components are not cheap. If you want to see the original Quora post, click here. | ALEX BLOM AUGUST 8, 2010 Social Media is NOT new Engage. Form Relationships. Share content. Social is the new currency. Social Media is the answer. There has been a fundamental shift in how we communicate. m sick of hearing it. This is not new information. How we communicate now is how great communicators have always worked their trade. Word of Mouth has always been powerful. Social Media may be a new term but the theories and fundamentals are not. My argument is that excluding the new term, social media is nothing new. What is Social Media? There are many definitions of social media. m a simple guy who lives by simple definitions. It should. | ALEX BLOM JANUARY 28, 2012 Thinking through the Megaupload Takedown I’m the first to agree that any website obviously engaged in piracy (vs. having independent users leverage the platform in unintended ways) should be shut down, and if this is the case with Megaupload, it should be shut down. However, the way Megaupload was shut down raises scary implications. With cloud based storage becoming primary for many, it is rather jarring to have people losing legitimate files in the process, with no recourse to immediately find or recover them. I One has to wonder how many users have less faith in these next-generation systems as a result. to our industry. | | | | | | | | | -
ALEX BLOM | TUESDAY, DECEMBER 28, 2010 Value Driven Relationships (Coupons & Search) In July, I wrote a post titled Bargained to Irrelevance. In it, I identified a huge problem with coupon / deal sites as the inability to segment and hyper-target buyers. also briefly touched on a second issue: when a brand is discounted frequently, most consumers will wait for the next sale period (especially online, where instant gratification is rarely a driver of purchase behaviour). was reading a post (courtesy of Spencer Thompson ) by Bradford Cross. In the article, Why is Groupon so Important? don’t at all disagree with Cross. The shift in channel value. value driven audience. MORE >> -

ALEX BLOM | THURSDAY, MAY 5, 2011 Wall Street Journal Launch Wikileaks Killer – and promise to out you in the process The mice that power the great wheel known as the internet have been running hard today. Plenty of big news, such as the Wall Street Journal launching a Wikileaks killer, called ‘Safehouse’ The WSJ claim that all entries will be reviewed by an Editor, who will decide the correct course of action. It’s only been a matter of time until somebody tries to capitalize on the Wikileaks success, and the WSJ make sense: they have a huge journalistic reach, and the ability shed light on issues where others may not. ALEX BLOM | WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 22, 2010 What are you really selling? Following on from my last post on sales, I’ve decided to write a very quick post on sales pitches, specifically how to categorize and phrase your product benefits (what you are really selling the customer). You can only be selling one of three things: Increased revenue; Decreased cost; or. Changed risk. That’s it. I’m not sure increased revenue or decreased cost require any further explanation. Clearly these are the categories we slot in benefits such as increased operational efficiency. That’s it. Your product has to be selling at least one of these three benefits. MORE >> -
ALEX BLOM | THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 25, 2010 Web & Social Analytics: Measurement vs. Monitoring Recently, Doug Stephens of Retail Prophet attended a video panel I moderated for IT World. The video was for a Tech Learning Space course I am collaborating on the design and delivery for. We started talking social, specifically deep social metrics and measurement. On the topic of metrics, Doug made the distinction between monitoring and measuring; a distinction that, sadly, too few make. Measurement. Is what we traditionally think of in metrics. We actively install systems to track these numbers. We plot them. We aim to improve these core metrics. We can only measure so much. Wrapping Up. MORE >> -
